In the 1880 course catalog, he noted: ""Twenty-five years have now elapsed since the Director inaugurated the Conservatory system of musical instruction in New England. Beginning in a comparatively small way, as a School of Music, it soon developed into a Musical Institute and in the year 1867 expanded into a full-grown and well-appointed Conservatory, on the same basis, and offering the same advantages as those which have existed in Europe for over 300 years"" (4).
