Martha Reinhard Smallwood Field, known as "Mattie," was born in Lexington, MO, but she spent most of her life in New Orleans, LA. "She was the first woman journalist to draw a salary in that city," according to her profile in A Woman of the Century (289)
A journalist, author, and travel writer, Field wrote under the pseudonym "Catharine Cole." During her career, she contributed to periodicals in New Orleans and San Francisco and edited the New Orleans Times-Democrat.
In the introduction to Field's Catharine Cole's Book, Mollie Evelyn Moore Davis noted Mattie's many contributions to New Orleans: "To the influence of her pen and brains, New Orleans owes its Training School for Nurses, it's Woman's Exchange, and its Kindergartens"(8). Interested in education for all, Mattie also founded a Circulating Library in New Orleans.
